My Christmas Blessing #12

My Christmas blessing this year has been able to apologize to certain others.  Being able to say you are sorry has a lot of power.  It can maintain healthy relationships, inspire self-reflections, and motivate a person to positively change their approach in the future.  A good apology is about looking into the inside of myself, carefully considering how my actions affect others, and thinking about how I can prevent misunderstandings from happening down the road.  Like any skill I practice, there is an art to "I am sorry".  Of course, there are some persons who do not care to receive an apology and that is all right as well.  Just know that I have tried to make things right once more is what truly matters.  Once enemies, we are now the best of friends.

Apologizing is great when my intent is to genuinely own up to my mistakes and make a change.  These past months, there are a few people that I have contacted, made amends, physical and emotional, and what a difference it has made.  I took in what was being said and examined why the person was offended.  I can actively change my behavior moving forward.  Finding a solution is important as well.  I will apologize after I have looked at the dispute with a clear head and are ready to take responsibility.  In the past, I have taken responsibility regardless if I was wrong or right.  I no longer do this.  I will take responsibility and restore integrity.  Actions speak louder than words.

It is okay to feel hurt or upset during a confrontation, so I give myself some time to process the situation.  It may be 10 years or so before I decide to confront an individual and if need be, apologize.  In regards to one situation, I am still very hurt and the deceptions continue.  When all calms down and it seems appropriate, the blessing of apology will come.

The blessings of this Christmas have already been abundant.  I couldn't be happier with the way live is advancing for the wonderful because ..

My Christmas Blessing #11

My Christmas Blessing today is evolution.  Not the evolution like creation .. or the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth.  My evolution  means the gradual development of something especially from a simple to a more complex form; like me!

"What a man can be.  This need we call self-actualization". ~ Abraham Maslow

This past year has been amazing for me!  New adventures and amazing people.  So when I wanted to "evolve", I began writing down what would make me even more incredible.  Here is what I came up with and practice every day ..

I practice gratitude.  I look at the good parts.  Gratitude attracts more goodness and positivity in life.  I am grateful for so many blessings and accomplishments that have happened this year and will continue into the next year.

I have let go of defensiveness.  I am saving myself and others time by skipping excuses, taking accountability and general nonsense.  Beware of denial, intellectualization, rationalization, projection, and I look at my life honestly.  I have great family and friends for perspective.  If is only when I let down my defensive wall that I can truly do deeper work and grow.

I practice acceptance.  I no longer expend energy fighting or resisting what I cannot change (other people, their feelings, their behaviors).  Instead, I empower myself to change what I can; my thinking, my behaviors, and most important, my boundaries.

I am learning to forgive and letting go of resentments.  I work to untether myself from the negative experiences of the past.  During times of prayer and meditation, I give thanks for wisdom and knowledge gained in my suffering.

I am trying to be authentic and real.  I have gained much confidence and courage.  Those extra pounds do not matter any more because the people that matter most accept me for all of me.

I try to reflect empathy.  I no longer have the need for judgment.  I try to consider how others feel and reflect back to them when appropriate.

I am practicing to be direct.  Say what I mean and mean what I say.  The truth will set me free.

I am kind and compassionate by only saying things that are kind, necessary and true.  I am of service to others.  I consider the needs and feelings of others before any action.

Most important, I am learning to love myself.  I am practicing compassion and self-care of me.  I am intelligent, beautiful, and wonderful things are happening in my life.

So this Christmas Blessing is my ability to celebrate my life, my unique spirit and gifts, taking excellent care of myself and my family, surrounding myself with people who love me, want the very best for me and help me grow because ..

My Christmas Blessing #10

Today we traveled to the mountains and found our gorgeous Christmas tree.  A Noble Fir that is indeed noble and straight.  Then, of course, a stop at our favorite cafe in Ucon for a hearty breakfast.  This tree is the center of a wonderful Holiday celebration as my sweet handsome has been very ill for the past two Christmases and I chose to not celebrate until he was better.  This year, he is better!  Not all the way like we would like, but blessings because he was not suppose to make it this long.  Our home smells of beautiful mixed aromas of apple pie and pine!  The beautiful scents of Christmas!

The evergreen was an ancient symbol of life during the midst of winter.  Romans decorated  their houses with evergreen branches during the New Year, and ancient inhabitants of northern Europe cut evergreen trees and planted them in boxes inside their homes during winter time.    By the early Middle Ages, the legend had grown that when Christ was born in the dead of winter, every tree miraculously shook off its ice and snow and produced new shoots of green.  Not until the Renaissance are there clear records of trees being used as symbol of Christmas; beginning in Latvia in 1510 and Strasbourg in 1521.  Legend credits the Protestant reformer Martin Luther with inventing the Christmas tree, but the story has little historical facts.

The most likely theory is that Christmas trees started with medieval plays.  Dramas depicting biblical themes as part of the church's worship, but by the late Middle Ages, they had become rowdy, imaginative performances dominated by lay people and taking place in the open air.  The plays celebrating the Nativity were linked to the story of the Creation; in part, because Christmas Ever was also considered the feast day of Adam and Eve.  As part of the play of the day, the Garden of Eden was symbolized by the "paradise tree" hung with fruit.  These plays were banned in many places in the 16th century and people began to set up "paradise trees" in their homes to compensate for the public celebration that they could no longer enjoy.  The earliest Christmas trees, actually evergreen branches, used in homes were referred to as "paradises".  They were often hung with round pastry wafers symbolizing the Eucharist, which developed into the cookie ornaments decorating German Christmas trees today!  We are so in love with our Gingerbread men cookies that seem to come to life on our tree and make for tasty treats!!

It took a long time for trees to become associated with presents.  Though legend connects the idea of Christmas gifts with the gifts that the Magi brought Jesus, the real story is more complicated.,  Like trees, the gifts were first a Roman practice, traded during the Winter solstice.   In the English speaking world, the union of gifts, and Christmas was due to the influence of Queen Victoria and her husband, Prince Albert, a native of Saxony, now part of Germany.  German immigrants had brought the custom of the Christmas trees with them in the early 1800s, but it spread widely after Victoria and Albert set up an elaborate tree for their children at Windsor Castle in 1841.  At this point, Christmas presents were usually hung on the Christmas tree itself.

As many of us make trees and gifts the center of our own Christmas practice, we would do well to remember that they are ultimately symbols of the One who gave himself to unite Heaven and Earth, and who brings all barren things to flower.  As with my family, we are grateful for the simple blessing of our Christmas tree to remind us how we are celebrating life because ..

To Be Target or Not To Be ..

"Psychological abuse, gender discrimination, sexual harassment, physical abuse, homophobia, and discrimination are prevalent problems in the attack of one who is an adult bully.  Unfortunately, our legal system accommodates bullies and the bullies benefit from the humiliation of the targets.  Some of the myths about why targets get bullies include:
  • Targets deserve or assist a bully's aggression.
  • Targets are weak.  In reality, it is the bully that is weak.  In our society, we associate strength with the "Machiavellian" behavior of aggression to be the most competitive.
  • Targets are too sensitive, unstable, and unhealthy whiners who have a problem with authority.
  • Targets are only in it for the money (from a lawsuit, for example).
  • Targets have a past, have erred, and the world should be aware of their flaws.
Targets are chosen as a result of a combination of circumstances (right person, wrong place) and personality traits.  Targets tend to be individuals who bring themselves alot of attention for being good at what they do or for having a personality that draws attention.  Targets unknowingly bring on the ire of bullies who fear their own inadequacies will be discovered or that attention will be taken away from them.  Generally, targeted individuals are very intelligent, determined, creative, and industrious.  At work, they go the extra mile, learn jobs quickly, come to understandings with other professionals rapidly and are trustworthy.  Being trustworthy is especially enticing to a bully when choosing a target.  Bullies do not know anything about being trustworthy and generally lack a true sense of integrity.

When a target begins to take the attention, show signs of success and progression, pushes towards strong ideals and assets, earns the respect and protection of professional peers, the bully suddenly feels threatened and wait, like all predators, for the ideal  moment to strike.  When the ideal moments comes, even if the moment is as small as an error on the part of the target, the bully will use it to full advantage to begin negative and debasing actions and words against the target, as well as attempting to round up allies.  The bully chooses the moment and from then on the target will be faced with hostile remarks and actions.  The bully has been able to create the environment of fear and hostility and most witnesses to this behavior will simply look the other way or excuse the bully's behavior in some way, as is usual in the cycle of violence.  The following usually begins to happen:
  • The target will deal with the bully's antics until mental and/or physical health is affected by the bully's aggression and isolation from her peers.
  • The target will suffer from all of the above but will begin to take action.  The action may be going to law enforcement, taking legal and legislative action, and other creative means that the target can find to gain acknowledgement and support.
Other answers to "why don't you stand up for yourself?" include:
  • A climate of dysfunction and fear makes people frightened to assert their rights.
  • The target feels bewildered and often cannot believe what is happening; the target feels responsible in some way.
  • Bullying is not against the law and the laws that do exist are difficult to apply to bullying.
  • By this time, the target is suffering a sever psychiatric injury, is traumatized, and unable to articulate the circumstances, while the bully remains glib and plausible.
  •  Trauma and fear combine to prevent the bully from being able to find the right words to identify, unmask, and call to account the bully's behavior.
  • The bully relies on compulsive lying, Jekyll and Hyde nature, deception, deviousness, evasiveness and charm, and uses denial, counter-attack, projection, feigning victim-hood to evade accountability.  Charm has a motive -- deception.
  • Many people are ignorant of or unenlightened about the nature of bullying.
  • Bullies are encouraged and rewarded.
  • The target naively believes that the system is there to protect her and will work for her (it isn't and it doesn't).
  • The target felt and continues to feel guilty about what happened, having been encouraged by the bully to believe target was responsible.
  • The target may have been encouraged to withdraw from legal action by the bully feigning victim-hood, playing on the target's forgiving chord and manipulating other people's sympathies.
Although many individuals in the United States ( I am one of them) are making efforts to address the need for better laws to deal with bullies, an intricate part of the mesh of our current society is the belief that aggression and competition lead to better results in profitability.  The truth is that bullying costs professions, individuals, and workplaces a tremendous amount of money. Once the bully realizes that the target is going to take action, the bully moves into a different objective; the elimination of the target.  This is done with continued violence against the target as a means of the malicious distortions of truth by the bully.  If the target does not succumb to the threats of the bully, ultimately the target will endure the hostility to the determent of health and with the debilitating effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),

PTSD is a wide and varied normal response to stressful situations that occurs to many individuals all over the world and for different reasons.  Although some common events trigger PTSD (such as a violent death of one's child), many times individuals experience PTDS based on isolated events of significance only to them, based on their life history, geographical location, politics, and other reasons.  Targets are know to experience some degree of PTSD with effects ranging from mild to very traumatic and debilitating, ending in death due to some physiological manifestations of stress, or suicide.  In brief, people suffering from PTSD as a result of bullying report:
  • fatigues with symptoms of, or similar to, chronic fatigue syndrome.
  • Anger, over injustice.
  • An overwhelming desire for acknowledgement, understanding, recognition, and validation of their experience.
  • A simultaneous and paradoxical unwillingness to talk about the bullying or abuse.
  • A lack of desire for revenge, but a strong motivation for justice.
  • A constant feeling that one has to justify everything one says and does.
  • A constant need to prove oneself, even when surrounded by good, positive people.
  • An unusually strong sense of vulnerability.
  • Feelings of worthlessness, rejection, and a sense of being unwanted, unlikable, and unlovable.
  • A feeling of being small, insignificant, and invisible.
  • An overwhelming sense of betrayal, and a consequent inability and unwillingness to trust anyone, even those that are close.
To be targeted by a bully is to suffer intense periods of isolation and illness. For survivors, it also means breaking away from the guilt of what has been unjustly done and moving on to a better place of strength, self-respect, and self-love.  We have a long way to go toward better politics, affordable and local opportunities for healing our trauma and supportive environments for individuals who want to end abusive behavior in the workplace.  However, I hope and pray that individuals will begin an open discussion on how bullying has affected them and begin to envision better ways to end violence in our local communities and over the world wide web in ways that can lead to defined laws and statutes and harsher consequences for those who wish to continue to hurt others.  I will continue with this mission because ..

My Christmas Blessing #8

There is something about Christmas lights.  Something magical, something peaceful, something warm, something meaningful.  Each twinkling Christmas light is a Christmas blessing.

We love to decorate our home with lights.  This year, we are hanging "gingerbread" lights.  Red and white, red and white.  I love living in an area where we are enjoying fresh trees filled with lights.  A new Christmas tradition.  The moment we turn on the Christmas lights, something magical happens as if the glow of lights penetrates the heart.  Suddenly, the craziness of the season disappears into the darkness and all that remains is light.  Warm, soft, peaceful, hope-filled light ..

In some ways, I suppose that is the entire Christmas story.  Matthew and Luke describe a dark night in an oppressed land in the midst of an upside-down world.  Cruelty and licentiousness defined the times; much like today.  Hopelessness was heavy in the air.  The people wondered, "Has God forgotten us? Abandoned us? Turned His back on us?!"  In the midst of that darkness came light.  I don't mean the Star, even though it may fit.  I am referring to the "Light in the Darkness"; the light described by John.  Light came into the world and even the oppressive darkness could not overcome it.  Truly, I am not sure that anyone who visited Jesus as He lay in that manger understood even a fraction of who He was and why He came.  I do think that they felt it and it was something beautiful.  Something indescribable.  Something peaceful .. Something warm .. Bringing hope to all.

For the first time in a long time, light was shining in the darkness, and at that moment, none of the troubles and chaos outside of the stable mattered at all.  All that mattered was the light.  This is how I feel when I look at my Christmas blessings twinkling and lighting up a night sky because ..

My Christmas Blessing #7

A college education acts as the key to a successful future to individuals who are serious and sacrifice to earn a college degree.  It helps to provide financial security and assists a person rebuild a remarkable reputation.  Personally, it has helped me to have a competitive edge in the workforce.  Currently, college education has become the minimum requirement in securing employment in various companies.  This has become a great blessing for my family and as I have become the income provider since my husband became ill almost two years ago.

With a college education, a person becomes more intelligent and thinking platforms change.  What used to seem important is now petty and insignificant.  Our quality and value of life has increased.  I am able to solve issues in an amicable and easy way.  It makes me capable of eliminating toxic people, their disagreements, and pettiness by using my own resolve or recruiting the assistance of those trained in such resolution tactics.  I love being challenged with new ideas and theories.

College education has given me great advantage in opportunity to socialize and make new friends that I otherwise would not have met.  Study groups are exciting and I interact with new people from different culture, learn how to embrace diversity, and remove some stereotypes associated with those cultures.  It has allowed me to be involved in sports, research, and humanitarian activities.

The blessing of education has increased my employment value, our quality of life, advance business expertise, and provide opportunities that I am able to choose where I would want to be.  I have become very satisifed with my life and looking forward to great investments in the future because ..
